Yuxiang Sun (Chinese Name: 孫宇翔), Assistant Professor, CityU
Yuxiang Sun joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) as an Assistant Professor in September 2023. He was selected as the World’s Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists, by Stanford University, in 2023 and 2022, and was also selected as the 2022 Global Top Chinese Young Scholars in AI (Top 50 in AI+X), AI华人青年学者榜, by Baidu.
Yuxiang leads the Autonomous Systems Lab (ASL) (自主系統實驗室), which currently has 1 Postdoctoral Fellow, 7 Ph.D students, and 1 Research Assistant. The lab has been sponsored by various funding bodies since its establishment in 2020. It was also funded with two PhD quotas by the highly-competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) in 2021/22 and 2022/23 admissions. Our sponsors include the University Grants Committee (大學教育資助委員會), Research Grants Council of Hong Kong (香港研究資助局), Hong Kong Innovation and Technology Commission (香港創新科技署), National Natural Science Foundation of China (国家自然科学基金委员会), Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province (广东省科学技术厅), and world-leading AI companies, such as Huawei (華為) and Baidu (百度), etc.
Yuxiang serves as an Associate Editor of the prestigious journals and conferences: IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles (T-IV), IEEE Robotics and Automation Letters (RA-L), IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), and IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS).
Before joining CityU, he was a faculty member with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Hong Kong, from 2020 to 2023. He worked as a research associate at the Robotics Institute, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Hong Kong, from 2018 to 2020. He received the Ph.D degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Hong Kong, in 2017, advised by Professor Max Qing-Hu Meng, the Master's degree from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), Hefei, China, in 2012, and the bachelor's degree from Hefei University of Technology (HFUT), Hefei, China, in 2009.
Yuxiang has published more than 80 peer-reviewed research papers, many of which were published on prestigious journals and conferences. His research work has been cited widely, leading to more than 2600 Google scholar citations with 26 H-index (as of Apr. 2024). Among his PhD and Postdoc research work, two first-authored Robotics and Autonomous Systems (RAS) papers were listed as the Most Cited Articles of this journal, one paper was also listed as the ESI Highly Cited Paper. He also has several IEEE Transactions/Letter/Magazine papers that were listed on the Popular Articles of these journals. He received the Best Paper in Robotics award at the IEEE-ROBIO 2019 conference, and the Best Student Paper Finalist award at the IEEE-ROBIO 2015 conference, both as the first author. Yuxiang is a reviewer for many prestigious journals and conferences, such as TRO, RAL, TIV, TASE, RAS, TITS, TPAMI, IJCV, TIP, ICRA, IROS, RSS, etc. His research interests lie primarily in Robotics and AI, Autonomous Driving, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Autonomous Systems, Mobile Robotics, Construction Robotics, Robotic Perception and Control, Autonomous Navigation, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, Indoor Positioning and Navigation, etc.
